These are the records of the North American Refractories Company (NARCO), an industrial concern which conducted business in Pennsylvania during the late nineteenth
and twentieth centuries. The company manufactured and sold products that were
used in high temperature applications such as glass, iron, and steel furnaces.
NARCO acheived this by buying many tracts of land from private individuals and
corporations. The rate at which NARCO acquired land is reflected within the
Deeds and Leases series, which documents the manner in which land was gained
in preparation to the construction of various sites. NARCO had numerous mines, quarries, and plants across the state located within various boroughs such as; Womelsdorf,
Strasburg, and Clearfield. NARCO was also concerned with the environmental aspect
of the propterty on which their plants were located which is detailed within
the Susquehanna Flood Control Files. There are a large number of photographs,
including aerial and ground level images of various sites.
The bulk of the collection covers the operations of NARCO
and is comprised mainly of financial materials, such as balances, bills, budgets,
distributions, expenses, inventories, journals, ledgers, reports, statements,
vouchers, etc. Files regarding the analysis of land also encompass a large number
of the records. Examples of land records found within the collection include
maps and survey files relating to specific NARCO sites; business and general correspondence; land records and legal
papers; and environmetal and resource reports. The collection also contains
records concerning coal, lumber, and clay operations associated with NARCO.
