Past or Old Repairs

Many historic cemeteries have markers and monuments that have been repaired in the past by well-meaning people. These repairs have often protected the stone from loss or further damage, but today theses repairs would not be considered acceptable. A professional conservator can probably be the best judge of whether old repairs should be left in place or retreated. Often, removing the old repair will do more damage to a stone. It is usually safest to leave the old repair in place if it is still viable and the marker needs no other treatment.
