Resetting

A common preservation task at most historic cemeteries is the resetting of gravestones. Although resetting of markers may seem like a straightforward task, it should be carried out by a conservation professional and/or trained volunteers. Grave markers have a tendency to migrate over time by way of vandalism and improper maintenance. Therefore, it is essential that research be performed to ensure that the marker to be reset is in its correct location.

Some indication for determining whether a grave stone should be reset may include:

  • When a grave marker has sunk below grade and the inscription has been obscured.
  • When a footstone has sunk below grade and requires excavation.
  • When a stone has been reset in an improper place or orientation, (i.e. footstones sometimes have been removed and set next to headstones for easy mowing).
  • When a stone has been reset improperly in the past and requires either straightening or replacement of structural components.
  • When a fragile stone in good condition requires stabilization to prevent potential damage.

Stones that appear incomplete, buried stones, and stone fragments may need to be located, uncovered, cleaned and/or treated by a conservation professional prior to reinstallation.
